Life Right Now | 09.11.18

I love to write this ‘life right now’ posts, it’s fun to document a little moment in time and have it to look back on. It has been a strange few weeks with some family illness, so it’s nice to focus on the positives and all the good things going on.

HEARING: The rain and the wind outside. The weather down here in Devon is always a little bit mad compared to London and the south east. Today at work, everyone was panicking about how they were going to get home as the crazy wind and falling trees had taken out the road and the rail. No wonder us brits talk about the weather so much!

DRINKING: I had the most delicious orange hot chocolate today, very much a friday treat – it was so yummy and made me feel a little festive too! Also some smoothies in the morning and lots of water.

EATING + COOKING: I have been making some soup; courgette, broccoli and sweet potato, kind of a random mix but it works. Also chilli (with secret ingredient: Cocoa Powder), Dahl and lots of noodle dishes. So many warming delicious recipes full of vegetables. Also have eaten a lot of Pho recently, I had it in when I was in Seattle and ever since then I have been a bit addicted. So good and warming. Discovered a place in Plymouth that does a really good one too, so have been going there sometimes too!

WANTING: to move Plymouth a little closer to London hehe. It would be nice to be slightly closer to family.

LOOKING: forward to the weekend. It has been one of those cold dark weeks and a little slow at work so I’m ready for a chill time with lots of blankets and reading. Also looking at my mum’s pictures of Perth – her and my dad are there this week and the amazing white sand and bright blue ocean have me craving an escape abroad somewhere sunny!

LISTENING: to lots of music. I’ve started listening to music more at home, while cooking or tidying or just chilling and it’s so wonderful. Music is so powerful. Currently loving James Vincent Mcmorrow, Angus and Julia Stone, Nick Murphy & all the fun 50s and 60s playlists on spotify. And sharing songs with S that I love is so nice. Cue silly dancing round the kitchen.

DECIDING: Where to go walking this weekend. I am hoping for a break in the rain so we can get outside and breath in some fresh country air. Maybe a lighthouse or the moors – we are lucky to have so many gorgeous spots around here so close to explore.

WEARING: A jumpsuit! It’s black with polka dots. At first I was a bit wary cause it’s kinda different to what I usually wear. But now I love it, and it’s so perfect for shoots at work, weeknight dates, after work drinks, it feels dressy but still cute and down to earth and I love it. Apart from that, really warm jumpers, as it is getting chilly in the evenings, but they keep the heating off for a little bit longer! Also some lovely waterproof blundstone boots I got for a steal on ebay.

READING: ‘The Kindness of Strangers’, it’s a beautiful collection of short stories all about acts of kindness people have experienced mainly while travelling or on crazy adventures. And the best part, it was made by Oxfam, and all royalties from the book are going towards their work with refugees. I also just finished ‘The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland’ by Jim DeFede which was a heartwarming read about a community that came together during 9/11 to support all the passengers stranded on their island. Have just started ‘The Children Act’ about a judge in the child welfare sector which is so far really interesting.

WATCHING: Our Girl, this series is one I dip in and out of. It’s a bit gruesome at times, and I literally watch it through my fingers sometimes but it’s pretty good. We also went to the Cinema a week or so ago (which is so rare for me, literally have been to the cinema about 20 times in my entire life!) to see Crazy Rich Asians, which was trashy but it knew it was trashy so it was a really fun watch – loved the Kina Grannis Cameo, one of my favourite singers during the wedding scene and also loved that it was set in Singapore. It was cool to see all the places my parents take us to when we visit on film. I also watched Stacey Dooley’s fast fashion documentary ‘The true cost’ and it really brought some things into focus for me. It was about the environmental impacts and human cost of the fashion industry and although I was not a massive shopper before now, I was partial to popping into H&M or getting something in the sales on occasion. I have now made a pact with myself to only buy things a) when I need them & b) from charity shops or Ebay or sustainable stores.

ENJOYING: this feeling of community that seems to have emerged in Plymouth for S & I. It has come at the right time & it’s lovely to walk somewhere in town and always bump into a friendly face or someone you know. The joys of living in a little city, I suppose.

CRAVING: A bit of sunshine and some more daylight please. Not loving the darkness, but trying to get outside at least once a day for an extended period of time has been good. S & I went walking after work last night to the pier nearby. The waves were crashing over one side of it (we stayed at a safe distance) and the wind was whipping my hair all over the place. It was so nice to feel the elements for a minute and then head back home to our cosy house.

LOVING: Time with S. He works away a fair bit at the moment, but having him home and with me has been so wonderful.

SAVOURING: My wonderful grandparents. So lucky to have them and be able to be close to them. They are the best.

MAKING: bowls! and hopefully mugs soon! I am taking a pottery class in the evenings at the local college and absolutely loving it! It’s so lovely to be making something tangible rather than digital. It makes me switch off from everything and it’s so fun too. Though currently, I only appear to be able to make bowls!

FEELING: grateful: for family and the NHS and the ability to visit family whenever I want to (on the weekends of course!)

  1. Ahh love reading these style posts from you 🙂 Really makes me think about savoring the little things, and also about eating more vegetables, LOL. Also I have to say this post has given me lots of Plymouth nostalgia! I’m so glad you’ve made a little community there. I hope I get to come back to the southwest sometime in 2019 🙂
